Step by Step guide to Install Virtual Machine with VMWare Workstation

VMWare Workstation is one of the most popular virtualization tools you can use on your home or company computer to make your virtualization environment. It supports many platforms which can be virtualized such as Windows, Linux etc. Often system administrator use VMWare for testing purposes. It is because its easy use and efficiency in making virtualized environments. In this article I will describe steps for creating virtual machine in VMWare Workstation. When machines created you have prerequisite for installing operating system on it.

Step 1 – Open VMWare Workstation console

To open VMWare Workstation console go to All Programs ->VMWare->VMWare Workstation:

Click on VMWare Workstation.

Step 2 – Create new virtual machine

When VMWare console is opened virtual machine can be created. To create new virtual machine click on File ->New->Virtual Machine:

Opens Wizard for new virual machine:

Also, you can use shortcut for wizard opening. This shortcut is ctrl+N.Click on Next to continue virtual machine creating.

Step 3 – Chose virtual machine configuration

Next window enable choosing your virtual machine configuration.

There is two posibilities: create typical virtual machine or custom virtual machine. Typical configuration assumes standard hardware devices in machine such as hard disk, CD/DVD device and network devices. If you want virtual device with specific hardware requirenments or specific configuration options choose custom. If you want to install ACE on your machine or want to create virtual machine compatibile with earlier versions of VMWare Workstation choose custom option.

In this example I will create typical machine.

After choosing option configuration click on Next.

Step 4 – Choose operating system for virtual machine

Next window enables choosing which operating system will be installed on new virtual machine.

There is many option for operating system. You can choose Windows, Liux, Novel, Sun Solaris or some other OS(MSDOS, FreeBSD etc). When choose one by checking one of the offered check box then version of OS can be  choosen from drop down list. In this example I will check Microsof Windows and Windows XP Professional which is default option. Then click Next.

Step 5 – Give the virtual machine name and set location

On next window name of the virtual machine and location or virtual machine storing should be set:

You should set the name of your machine. Also you can specify in which folder will created virtual machine be saved. By default it is C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\My Virtual Machines\ but you can change if you want.

Click Next.

Step 6 – Choose number of processors

On next window choose number of processors on virtual machines. If you want two processors important thing that you should have on mind is the host machine should  have at least two logical processors. It can be dual core processor, or processor supporting hyperthreading or multiprocessor machine.

Check number of processors and click Next

Step 7 – Specify RAM memory for virtual machine

Now, you should specify amount of RAM memory should be installed on your virtual machine. On the window is slider by which you can set amount of memory. Also there are points which denotes  minimum, recommended and maximum for best performance amounts of memory for specified guest operating system.

When memory is allocated, click Next.

Step 8 – Choose virtual networking for your virtual machine

Next window enables you to choose virtual networking for virtual machine.

There is four possibilities:

  1. Use bridged networking – your virtual machine will be bridged with host and will have connection to external netwok through physical network adapter on host
  2. Use network address translation(NAT) – virtual maching use physical network adapter from host but its address is nated to addresss of host adapter.
  3. Use host –only networking – virtual machine has network connectivity to host machine and other virtual machineg which use host –only networking. It has not access to external network.
  4. Do not using network connection – you can choose to not using virtual networking. It can be added later, when virtual machine is installed.

When virtual networking is choosen click Next.

Step 9 – Allocate virtual disk space

In next window you should set your virtual disk parameters.

Fist, size of virtual disk should be set. In the field for disk size is set value of maximum disk size. You can set value which satisfies your needs. Also you can choose to allocate disk space immediately or let the VMWare to expand disk when it is needed. Also disk can be split  into 2GB files.

When disk space is allocated click on Finish to finish process of creating virtual machine.

Click on Close. Now virtual machine is created and ready for operating system installation.

In this simple steps I described process of typical virtual machine creation which you can use to create your virtual environment. This will allow you having multiple servers or PC within a single PC. Just make sure that your PC has enough RAM to host multiple machines. Enjoy Virtualization!!
